2024 New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation (NM AMP) Student Research Conference
October 7, 2024
On October 4, 2024, New Mexico State University hosted the 2024 New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation (NM AMP) Student Research Conference. The NM AMP Student Research Conference brings together students and faculty from across the state and provides the opportunity each fall for students to present research, gain presentation experience, network with other students and with faculty, and participate in workshops and panels. The focus of the next few years of NM AMP is climate resilience.
ARID Co-Director Dr. Marcy Litvak and ARID Sr Program Manager Debbie Lee led a workshop introducing students to resilience in drylands, showcasing how different ARID Leadership Team members approached resilience in their research. The students then engaged in a Silent Conversation around each of the four ARID areas: Sustainable Water, Adaptive Infrastructures, Community Health & Vitality, and Healthy Ecosystems. A Silent Conversation is a written conversation that allows participants to have documented dialogue on an even basis with many different conversation threads happening at the same time.
Dr. Andreas Hernandez, UNM Director of Sustainability Studies and ARID Leadership Team members, also led a workshop on “Sustainability: Creatively Aligning with the Web of Life,” This workshop explored ways to understand sustainability which go beyond reducing our collective footprints, and lean into constructing socio-technic pathways which align with the rest of the web of life. Students workshopped how their studies and professions could contribute to the making of a sustainable, resilient and regenerative region and planet.
ARID will be the UNM Institutional Coordinator for the AMP program, which provides scholarship funding, mentorship, and research opportunities for minority undergraduate students in a declared STEM major. More information about the AMP program is available here: https://nmamp.nmsu.edu/.
