ARID on Tap Community Conversation on Planetary Health and Microplastics

April 18, 2025

Each semester, the ARID Institute holds a community conversation at a local brewery around a resilience topic. This semester, we were joined by Dr. Heidi Rogers, College of Nursing, and Dr. Claudia Pratesi, College of Population Health. Dr. Rogers described Planetary Health, which is "a solutions-oriented, transdisciplinary field and social movement focused on analyzing and addressing the impacts of human disruptions to Earth’s natural systems on human health and all life on Earth." (Planetary Health Alliance), and discussed how the health of earth systems impact human health.

Dr. Pratesi then summarized some of the many avenues microplastics enter our food, air, and water, and the research showing linkages between microplastics to accelerating climate change, to adverse human health outcomes.

The community members in attendance had a lively discussion and Q&A with Drs Rogers and Pratesti.

For those who missed there, ARID is co-sponsoring the May 22, 2025 Thirsty 4 Thought: Living in a Plastic World at Painted Lady Bed & Brew (1100 Bellamah Ave NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104) from 6:30-8:30 PM, with more conversations around micro- and nanoplastics.
